EASTERN LOWLANDS
A day tour in search of the birds of the Llano-Cartí Road, the border between Panama Province and Guna Yala
Llano-Cartí Road- Is located in the Eastern side of the Panama province, two hours drive from Panama City. Foothills species of eastern Panama can be find on this road near the border between Panama Province and Guna Yala.
Llano Cartí Road is one of eastern Panama´s best birding areas. The area features numerous endemics species of the Darién lowlands and foothills as well as several other hard-to-find species.
Target species include, but not limited to Speckled (Spiny-faced) Antshrike, Green Manakin, Sulphur-rumped Tanager, Tawny-capped Euphonia, and Dull-mantled Antbird.

The Speckled Antshrike or Spiny-faced Antshrike (Xenornis setifrons) is a species of bird in the Thamnophilidae family. It is the only member of the genus Xenornis. It is found in Colombia and Panama. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.
The Red-capped Manakin (Ceratopipra mentalis) is a species of bird in the Pipridae family. It is found in Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru and Panama. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The Slaty-winged Foliage-Gleaner (Philydor fuscipenne) is a perching bird species in the ovenbird family (Furnariidae). It is found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
The Spot-crowned Antvireo (Dysithamnus puncticeps) is a species of bird in the Thamnophilidae family. It is found in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The Black-crowned Antpitta or Black-crowned Gnatpitta (Pittasoma michleri) is a species of bird in the gnateater family. It is found in Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The Limosa Harlequin Frog (Atelopus limosus), sapo limosa in Spanish, is an endangered species of toad in the Bufonidae family endemic to Panama. Its natural habitats are stream banks in tropical moist lowland forests and rivers of the Chagres watershed in central Panama.
The Sapayoa or Broad-billed Sapayoa (Sapayoa aenigma) is a suboscine passerine found in lowland rainforests in Panama and northwest South America. As the epithet aenigma ("the enigma") implies, its relationships have long been elusive. It is easy to overlook, but appears to be common in a wide range and is not considered threatened by the IUCN.
